Er was een tijd dat je de trotse verzamelaar was van boeken, videobanden, DVD’s, LP’s of CD’s. Deze stonden dan in kasten in je woon- of slaapkamer en straalden voor een deel je identiteit uit. Aan de verzameling kon je een beetje bepalen hoe je in elkaar zat. Was je links of rechts, hield je van fictie of non-fictie, was je een rocker, klassieke-muziekliefhebber, hiphop- of soulfanaat? En de kwantiteit gaf aan welk belang je hieraan gaf.
Mijn vrouw is een fervente verzamelaar van boeken en ik was dat altijd van muziek: eerst LP’s en later CD’s. Beeldmateriaal verzamelen heb ik nauwelijks gedaan. Met een enorme mediaverzameling in de kast kon je indruk maken en er was altijd wel een reden om ermee bezig te zijn, bijvoorbeeld lijstjes maken, van wat je had of wat er nog ontbrak. Tot pakweg begin jaren zeventig was de enige ‘on demand’ mogelijkheid voor beeld en muziek het bezit. Je moest erop uit om bijvoorbeeld muziek te kopen. De platenzaken in dorp en stad waren voor mij onweerstaanbaar en menig uur heb ik hierin doorgebracht. Met een jeugdvriend ging ik zelfs naar Saturn in Köln om in het begin van de jaren 80 CD’s te kopen, omdat deze in Nederland nog niet of nauwelijks -en te duur- verkrijgbaar waren.
Met de komst van bandrecorders, cassettebandjes en videobanden was het bezit van het origineel niet zo belangrijk meer en konden ook minder gefortuneerde mensen films en muziek ‘on demand’ luisteren die ze niet hadden gekocht. Van het origineel werd de muziek of film opgenomen op de banden of cassettes. Dit was illegaal, maar er werd veel door de vingers gezien, omdat a) handhaving onmogelijk was en b) door verspreiding toch ook de bekendheid van de artiest of het medium groter werd en daardoor toch beter verkocht.
Bij boeken hebben bibliotheken al van oudsher de ‘on demand’-functie vervuld. Varianten van bibliotheken werden videotheken en er zijn ook een aantal uitleencentra geweest voor LP’s en CD’s. Deze zijn later vaak samengevoegd met bibliotheken.
Met de opkomst van elektronische hulpmiddelen werd alles anders. Het begon met het muziekformaat MP3 dat muziek via een iPOD of andere MP3-speler in zeer acceptabele kwaliteit kon weergeven. De apparaten waren klein en konden veel meer muziek opnemen dan de walkmans met cassettes. Door de opkomst van internet en de vergroting van de bandbreedte , werd verspreiding van muziek veel eenvoudiger. Toch verzamelden nog veel mensen illegaal muziek van het internet en later met diensten als iTunes legaal op hun eigen computers, om zelf te kunnen bepalen wanneer ze iets wilden horen.
Bij de boeken verliep dit anders. Echte lezers hebben niet alleen iets met verhalen en letters, maar ook iets met vasthouden en geur van boeken. De gemiddelde boekenverslinder is veel conservatiever dan de muziek- of filmliefhebber. Hoewel er al ruim tien jaar e-books zijn met e-bookreaders met e-paperinkt, vindt dit tot nu toe maar matig vervolg bij de lezers. Ikzelf lees eigenlijk alleen maar boeken in de vakantie en ik vind juist zo’n e-reader fijn, omdat het vele kilo’s bagage scheelt, maar mijn vrouw denkt hier heel anders over.
Maar mogelijk gaat men binnenkort toch massaal over op lezen uit de internet cloud, nu het internet binnen Europa betaalbaar is geworden. Met diensten waarbij voor een vast bedrag per maand toegang geboden wordt tot een haast onbeperkt aanbod digitaal leesvoer door commerciële aanbieders kun je de boekenstapel -en -gewicht- thuis laten.
Bij films is het verloop weer anders. Jarenlang hebben verzamelaars het internet leeggezogen om de nieuwste films -vaak illegaal- over te zetten naar hun eigen PC. Afgezien dat dit een aanslag is op de bandbreedte en opslagruimte heb ik me altijd afgevraagd: waarom in hemelsnaam? Als ik een film gezien heb, hoef ik deze -zeker de eerste jaren- niet meer te zien. Ik neem aan dat dit bij andere mensen niet anders is. Een stuk muziek kan je horen en je kunt ondertussen nog iets anders doen. Bovendien is het herhalen van muziek juist erg prettig, omdat het vaak herinneringen oproept.
Maar de kasten met LP’s, DVD’s, Videobanden en boeken verdwijnen langzamerhand. Alles wordt ‘on demand’. Met je tablet of afstandsbediening kun je op elk moment van de dag alle media oproepen die je maar wenst. Het vervelende is dat je of per keer of in abonnementsvorm betaalt. De ene aanbieder biedt dit en de andere dat en voor je het weet betaal je misschien wel 50 euro per maand aan aanbieders van films en muziek. Dat is overigens altijd nog veel minder dan de kosten die ik in het verleden maakte door CD’s en LP’s te kopen. Maar het voelt anders omdat je er geen bezit en dus niets tastbaars aan overhoudt.
In het algemeen zal bezit sowieso plaats gaan maken voor gebruik ‘on demand’. In een wereld die we duurzamer willen maken wordt het gebruiken van elkaars zaken zoals fiets, woning, auto, gereedschap en noem maar op, steeds populairder en neemt de behoefte aan bezit af. Daar past de ‘on-demand’-verandering bij media ook bij. Als bijna babyboomer is dit wel even wennen.
