Gisteren kreeg ik van mijn baas een mail dat me feitelijk verbood op mijn werk te komen als ‘fysiek’ werken niet nodig was. We hebben binnen ons bedrijf geavanceerde mogelijkheden om thuis te werken en kunnen alles delen met Teams en Skype op onze schermen thuis. Dus ook vergaderen, samen aan stukken werken en brainstormen hoeven we echt niet te doen in een vergaderzaaltje met een whiteboard of scherm. De verzekeraar waar ik werk propageerde al in 1998 thuiswerken. Aanvankelijk was dit ingegeven als een bezuinigingsmaatregel omdat de groei van het personeel groter was dan de nieuwbouw van de verzekeraar destijds aankon. Ook om de Arbowet destijds tegemoet te komen had men het thuiswerken gecombineerd met een cultuuromslag. ‘De werkplek is waar je bent’ werd de slogan en dat in een tijd dat we net overgingen naar ISDN en er nog geen sprake was van algemeen WiFi of 4G.
Flexwerken werd op grote schaal ingevoerd waardoor je per saldo minder vierkante meters nodig hebt om een groot aantal mensen te laten werken, zonder het gevoel te scheppen dat het gebouw overbevolkt is. Bovendien blijft het gebouw ook lekker schoon, omdat iedereen alles mee moet nemen als hij of zij klaar is met zijn werk. Destijds was dit een revolutie. In een tijd dat er nog geen smartphones waren hadden wij al een dekkend draadloos telefoonstelsel van duizenden DECT telefoons en liepen we met laptops rond, die in die jaren nog fors aan de prijs waren. Het concept en het gebouw werd bijna een toeristische attractie met duizenden bezoekers per jaar. Helaas zie je, dat doordat de boekhouders vanwege streng toezicht weer aan de macht zijn, het concept links en rechts nu weer geweld wordt aangedaan. Het agile-scrum-werken is populair geworden en dat betekent bij elkaar zitten.
Het coronavirus blaast de slogan: “De werkplek is waar je bent” nu weer nieuw leven in. Omdat er technisch weinig belemmeringen zijn, kan wat ons werken betreft zeker 80% van het personeel dit vanaf thuis doen. De enige belemmering kan zijn dat het netwerk ons in de steek laat. Ik heb werk waarbij ik contacten leg tussen vier vestigingen verspreid over het hele land. Als ik telkens iedereen zou moeten opzoeken ben ik meer dan een derde van mijn tijd onderweg, sta ik in files, en produceer ik fijnstof en CO2. Omdat ook ik duurzaam wil participeren in deze maatschappij zal ik zomaar niet gaan reizen. Zeker niet omdat mijn productiviteit met al dat reizen niet hoger wordt, maar lager. Alle overbodige reistijd kan ik netto besteden aan mijn werk.
Thuiswerken is niet hetzelfde als thuis zijn in de zin van vrij zijn. Ik heb een werkkamer los van de rest van het huis en sluit me tijdens mijn werk hier op. Ik ben makkelijk afgeleid, dus dat helpt. Dat wil niet zeggen dat ik niet eens opsta om koffie te drinken, te eten en een pakketbezorger van zijn last help verlossen. Effectief werk ik langer dan op kantoor. Bovendien is het ook wel fijn dat je tussendoor even iets privé kan doen zonder uren van het werk te zijn, zoals tandarts- of huisartsbezoek. Je krijgt er veel vrijheid voor terug maar het ontslaat je niet van je verantwoordelijkheid voor je werk.
Het gevolg is dat ik de afgelopen tijd al meer dan de helft van mijn werktijd thuis werk. En sinds de Covid-19 pandemie is dit nu zelfs full time. Hoewel ik dus al veel thuis werk mis ik nu plotseling toch wel mijn collega’s. Kies je vrijwillig voor thuiswerken dan kies je bewust voor afstand, maar nu het opgedragen wordt, voelt het als een inperking van je vrijheid. Bijkomend probleem is dat we langzamerhand in een persoonlijk isolement raken, omdat sociale omgang in het algemeen zoveel mogelijk wordt afgeraden. Mensen gaan dan rare dingen doen. Het hamsteren had ik aanvankelijk niet zien aankomen, maar blijkt nu wel het gevolg. Alsof we in een winterslaap komen en dichtbij ons hol allerlei voedselvoorraden nodig hebben om te overleven.
Nu er maatregelen worden genomen om de pandemie zoveel mogelijk in te dammen of te vertragen denkt het volk dat het allemaal nog veel erger gaat worden. Typisch is dan ook dat de roep om nog strengere regels en afspraken sterker wordt, terwijl wetenschappelijk is aangetoond dat dit in dit stadium niet nodig is. Maar in de huidige tijd is wetenschap ook maar een mening, volgens een steeds groter wordende domme menigte. De angst regeert en de grootste bangerik Geert Wilders verwijt nu al de regering dat Rutte de geschiedenis zal ingaan als uitroeier van het volk door ‘zwak’ optreden.
Te strenge – niet werkend aangetoonde- maatregelen zullen leiden tot een enorme economische catastrofe. Ik begrijp de terughoudendheid van Rutte wel om niet meer te doen dan aangetoond is dat werkt.
Als we heel Nederland op slot zetten gaat zeker alles kapot. Als het volledig uit de hand loopt kan dit leiden tot de apocalyps. Nu al zie je dat hele bedrijfstakken stil vallen, waarbij miljarden verdampen. Voor dit soort rampen met deze omvang zijn geen verzekeringen bedacht.
Ook de beurzen reageren erg negatief op deze situatie, nog versterkt door geruzie over olie tussen de VS en Rusland.
Samen optrekken is ver te zoeken tussen landen, zowel ten aanzien van strategie om het virus te bestrijden als het beschermen van het eigen volk. Net als de hamsteraars bij de supermarkten denkt men dat een land een soort hol is waar men zich nu moet terugtrekken. Vreemd is dat het vooral Trump is die dit politiseert. Mensen uit Europa mogen niet meer naar de VS, omdat daar het virus vandaan is gekomen, volgens hem . Maar men is wel welkom als men uit het verenigd koninkrijk en Ierland komt, want dat zijn vrienden of voorouders. Alsof het virus onderscheid maakt tussen volkeren.
Ik ben 63 jaar oud en zo’n mondiale ontwrichtende situatie heb ik nog nooit meegemaakt. Typisch is dat het gebeurt zonder een terroristische achtergrond of een politieke machtsstrijd. Ik voel me nu wel een soort oorlogsverslaggever. Hoe dit gaat aflopen daar kan ik geen slag naar slaan.
